'Rick And Morty' Season 3 Breaks Adult Swim Viewership Record
Despite being regularly pestered by cancellation rumors, "Rick And Morty" season 3 finished on top. The animated sitcom recently broke Adult Swim's viewership records and claiming the title of television's No. 1 comedy.
Last Sunday's finale drew a 3.9/821 in adults 18 to 24 age group and a 3.2/1521 in adults 18 to 34 age group in the Live+ same day. It was the most-watched telecast of the day among the 18 to 24 age group, 18 to 34 age group and 18 to 49 age group demographic according to Adult Swim and Nielsen. Additionally, Adult Swim has revealed that the show was also the network's most-watched comedy in its history of programming.
According to Cartoon Network president Christina Miller, the show is truly what a modern day hit looks like across multiple screens and touchpoints. Millar added that the show's creators have created a world, not just a show, in which fans are completely engaged.
Created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the series follows a sociopathic genius scientist and his grandson. Together, they go on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe all the while showcasing the show's unique brand of humor.
The show's massive popularity doesn't stop with TV screens however as "Rick and Morty" is also a strong performer online. In fact, during its April Fool's Day livestreaming event on AdultSwim.com, the show registered 3 million unique visitors. This is in addition to Facebook, which also hosted the livestream, which recorded 43.3 million impressions and 8.7 million video views combined.
The show's popularity also filtered on other shows and even real life. One example of the former was during Simpsons Season 26 when one of the show's couch gags featured the main characters from the show. In 2015, the fast food restaurant chain Carl's Jr. and Hardee's featured a commercial also featuring the grandfather and grandson duo.
There is currently no word with regards to a fourth season of "Rick and Morty." However, given the show's massive popularity it's probably safe to say that Adult Swim will give it the green light.
