'Riverdale' Season 2 News, Air Date: Trailer Teases More Drama, Danger; Betty To Be at Center of New Mystery

The CW has released a new trailer for the upcoming second season of "Riverdale."

The trailer opened with Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica all dressed like their comic book counterparts as they hang out at Pop's Diner. But the homage does not last long. Suddenly, Archie had a gun pointed at him.

The scene then shifted to Fred at the hospital. As fans may recall, he was shot at the end of season 1. It was clear from Jughead's narration and the scenes that followed that Riverdale is no longer a safe place to live in. There is a lot of blood and romance in store for fans in season 2, as well as a wedding, according to a brief glimpse in the trailer.

The new season will revolve around a new mystery, though specific details about the plot remain under wraps. However, fans should not expect a mystery similar to Jason Blossom's murder.

"The one thing I was nervous about was doing another murder mystery, because it felt like the Jason thing was done so well that I was nervous about doing one that felt like a pale imitation game of the first one," showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly. "So we started talking about different genres."

All of the characters will receive their own share of drama and excitement. For Jughead (Cole Sprouse), it is his involvement with the Southside Serpents. For Veronica (Camila Mendes), it is the return of her father, Hiram (Mark Consuelos), and the appearance of her ex-boyfriend Nick St. Claire (Graham Phillips). Nick's arrival in Riverdale will surely cause some problems between her and Archie.

Speaking of Archie, fans already know that they will see the character's darker side in the upcoming season. And K.J. Apa recently teased a "completely different Archie" in a behind-the-scenes video interview with Entertainment Weekly.

As for Betty, she will be the most involved in the unknown mystery in the new season. This much was teased by both Aguirre-Sacasa and Lili Reinhart herself.

"I can't say too much because there's a couple of big twists, but Betty is absolutely at the heart of the darkest story we're telling this season," the showrunner said.

"She kind of finds herself in the center of the mystery in season 2," Reinhart previewed.

"Riverdale" season 2 will premiere on Oct. 11 on The CW.
