'Scandal' Season 5 News, Spoilers: Series Star Teases What's Next For Character
Fans are already counting the days when ABC's hit Shondaland drama TV series "Scandal" returns for the second half of its Season 5. Part of the excitement was caused by the development of Mellie Grant's aspiration to take over her estranged husband's seat in the White House.
As of the moment, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) is still in power. However, followers of the series have already known that the wife is eyeing the position and she's actually brewing up plans to make it happen in the next couple of months.
Entertainment Weekly recently caught up with series star Bellamy Young at the SAG Awards party last Friday in Los Angeles.
According to the actress who plays the part of Mellie, the writers are somehow channeling the current hype of the real-life 2016 presidential election into the show.
"I think they're taking advantage of this once in a lifetime kind of synergy of fiction and fact and just really going to town with it," she told EW.
Speaking of which, she also teased about her alter-ego finally realizing the consequences of the steps she has made in her political career.
"She's so excited to be part of the presidential campaign, but I think she's really learning that it's easier to be a backseat driver now that she's behind the wheel. She just makes unbelievable mistakes."
Talking about the players in the field, Young also hinted that viewers better brace themselves as they are about to see a mixture of old and new characters who "are really going to be a bunch of wild, craziness to watch."
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the upcoming Season 5 will open up to a six-month time-jump. This means that most of the characters in the story may have already moved on from the events that occurred during the fall finale episode which aired on Nov. 19 of last year.
"Scandal" Season 5B returns Thursday, Feb. 11 with the episode titled "It's Hard Out Here For A General." Stay tuned for more updates.
