Scarlett Johansson Movies 2015 News: Bags Another Action Packed Role in 'Ghost in the Shell'

Scarlett Johansson landed another comic-book role for the film adaptation of the hit Japanese anime "Ghost in the Shell."

It is no surprise that Johansson is the top choice for another action film with a female lead role. Her 2014 sci-fi, action movie "Lucy" earned $458 million out of a $40 million budget. The actress is also well known for her role as Black Widow in "The Avengers" franchise. To add to her record of sci-fi films, Johansson also played as an alien disguising as a female human being to lure men in "Under the Skin."

Johansson was reportedly offered $10 million for the movie adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell."

The hit manga in 1989 authored by Masamuni Shirow followed the life of cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi who works for Japan's National Public Safety Commission dubbed as the Public Security Section 9. The team hunts terrorists and fights cyber attacks including an elusive computer hacker.

"Ghost in the Shell" is a 1995 animated movie followed the comic book faithfully and gained a huge fan base. There is still no official confirmation if the Hollywood movie will follow all the elements and characters of the comic book as well, Time magazine reported.

The live film version will be directed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders. In 2009, Steven Spielberg brought the rights of the Japanese comic book for a film adaptation. Spielberg was reportedly a fan of the 1995 animated film of "Ghost in the Shell."

"The Matrix" was also highly inspired by the animated series. It was reported that the directors of the film who starred Keanu Reeves showed the "Ghost in the Shell" clips to the producers as an inspiration for the futuristic theme.

Since the live film adaptation is still in the works, fans can get a glimpse of what "Ghost in the Shell" is like in the sneak peek of the animated film, which is set to be released summer of 2015 in Japan.
