Secret NES Game Hiding Inside Nintendo Switch

After more than six months in the market, most users feel that they already know all about the Nintendo Switch. That seemed to be the case until modders found a secret game hidden in the console recently.

Since its release, modders have been digging through the console's code to figure out how it works as well as to find anything interesting. It was then when they discovered a hidden game inside the console itself.

It was later revealed to be the classic 1984 NES game "Golf" and was hidden inside a system file labeled "flog" which certainly gives it away. According to one of the modders who go by the name of Yellow8, the game is on every copy of the Switch going back to system 1.0, and includes instructions specific for the Joy-Con controllers.

Switch owners can't play it right away though as it still needs to be unlocked before it can be accessed. "It's unknown what exactly triggers launching this title," yellows8 wrote on SwitchBrew.org, a website that serves as a repository of hacking and file-system analysis for the console.

The game appears to be residing the part of the console that is dedicated to NES emulation. This means that it will probably be playable in due time and also hints at Nintendo's plans for releasing classic NES games on the Switch.

Nintendo has previously promised that they plan to revive the NES Classic Edition in 2018 to the joy of their fans. If this is to be the case, it would be safe to assume that the "Golf" game hidden in the Switch could be playable in that time as well, that is unless modders figure out a way to unlock it beforehand.

"Golf" is the first glimpse fans have of the fabled NES emulator despite being the topic of discussion a few months back. For now, however, gamers who want to relive their childhood can do it with Nintendo's SNES Classic Edition.
