He explained that season 4 of "Sherlock" will present a darker theme centered on the idea of consequences. According to Entertainment Weekly, he stated, "We're going to try to take it somewhere we've never been before — and I don't mean outer space. It will be challenging place to go. We always start with a re-introduction that builds toward a darker climax — we might just be going darker [from the outset]. We got a very, very good set of ideas."

In addition, there are also speculations that another member of the Holmes family will be joining the character roster of the upcoming season. The previous season of the series already revealed Mycroft, Sherlock's brother. With that, there are rumors that another one of their siblings will be introduced in the next season. Some fan theories explain that the character will be played by Tom Hiddleston. Fans of Hiddleston and Cumberbatch are reportedly excited to see this happen. However, there has yet to be any news regarding the matter.

Nevertheless, the highly anticipated return of hit series "Sherlock" is expected some time in 2017.
