Soccer: Lionel Messi Says He Wants to Return Home and Play for Newell's Old Boys
Argentinian football star Lionel Messi knows he's human and there will come a time when he will be forced to contemplate on his remaining days in the sport. So when asked what he intends to do if given the opportunity to finish his career in his native country, he didn't hesitate in revealing his desire to play for no other local soccer club than Newell's Old Boys.
It actually makes sense since the club is the same team where he played his first few years of competitive football. As a matter of fact, he still was playing for them when Barcelona acquired him to be sent to La Masia academy. In an interview with Urban Planet, Messi said, "If I go back to Argentina tomorrow, which I would love, the club I would be play for would be Newell's."
The winner of five Ballon d'Or awards knows his days in football will be over sooner than later, but he didn't give any specific time or detail as to when that "return" to his homeland will happen, though he hints that it is still several years from now.
Only a very few football players in history can say that they've achieved more than what Messi has in his colorful and legendary career. His achievements are more like those achieved by someone who has been playing football for two decades. However, the Argentinian is actually just 28 years old, which means he still has a lot of years ahead of him.
Consistently labeled as the best player in the world today, he is the only one to have won the World Player of the Year by FIFA five times. As a member of Spanish club Barcelona, he won seven La Liga championships and four UEFA Champions League titles. He is best known for his remarkable goal scoring abilities, currently owning the record for the most goals scored in La Liga history in a season and a calendar year. He also owns the record for the most goals scored in a Champions League match with five.
