'Sons of Anarchy' Spin-off Series 'Mayans MC' News: Writer Elgin James To Present A 'Unique Latin Voice'
Fans can soon expect to see a spin off series for the hit FX show "Sons of Anarchy."
It was previously announced that "Sons of Anarchy" will present a spin off series titled "Mayans MC." According to IGN, the project will be headed by Kurt Sutter, who is the creator of "Sons of Anarchy. In addition, Elgin James will be acting as an executive producer for the series.
FX has already presented a pilot script for the series written by James himself. In the network's statement, the upcoming series will revolve around family drama, which will explore the story in a Latino point of view.
Sutter explained that they were determined to find an authentic voice that will represent the Latino culture, which is why they had James wrote the premiere episode of "Mayans MC." He said, "I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."
Reports by Deadline explained that James' past could be a representation of the past "Sons of Anarchy" characters. James was reportedly a homeless teenager, engaged in hardcore punk subculture of Boston. He was immersed in the city's multi-ethnic gang, which played a big part in his life. He then left Boston to take on the Sundance Institute Feature Film program in Los Angeles.
The upcoming spin-off will tell the story of the Mayans Motorcycle Club, which was introduced in "Sons of Anarchy." Mayans MC was present throughout all seven seasons of "Sons of Anarchy," which ended last 2014. The group was portrayed as the enemy of SAMCRO.
In "Sons of Anarchy," the leader of the Mayans MC was a character named Marcus Alvarez, who was portrayed by Emilio Rivera. However, there has yet to be any details on his reprisal of the role or any other characters expected to be present.
With that, no release date for "Mayans MC" has been officially announced.
