The phone's abilities were demonstrated in Taiwan this week where it was compared to the HTC One M9+ traditional autofocus camera.

The Xperia M5 boasts of a 21.5MP Exmor RS main shooter with an f/2.2 lens capable of ISO 3200,. The rear camera carries Sony's new IMX230 CMOS sensor that enables as much as a 5x zoom without compromising image quality. It features a 13MP front-facing camera, and 4K video recording.

Incorporated into Sony's waterproof and dust proof frame, and fronted by a 5-inch 1080p display, the phone is powered by an octa-core 2.0 GHz 64-bit MediaTek Helio X10 SoC.

With 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage under the hood boosted by a microSD card under the hood, it will be running Android 5.0 out of the box and carry a 2,600mAh battery Sony claims will last for two full days.

A smaller-sized smartphone at 145mm x 72mm x 7.6mm, it weighs 142.5g and supports GSM, LTE, and UMTS.

The Xperia M5, expected to be priced at an estimated $400, is likely to be launched in the market together with the 6-inch Xperia C5 Ultra. Unlike the Xperia C5 Ultra that's scheduled to hit retail establishments within the week, the Xperia M5 will be available in Taiwan by September, with no information on when it is likely to be released globally.
