'Spider-Man: Homecoming' News, Spoilers: Tom Holland on What Sets His Spider-Man Apart; Kevin Feige Talks Sony Partnership
While Tom Holland thinks that Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man portrayals were "brilliant," the new Spidey also said that he tried not to copy what they did in their own "Spider-Man" films. Instead, he set out to portray a younger Peter Parker/Spider-Man, whose reaction to the Avengers is something fans are sure to enjoy.
Holland, who makes his debut as the swinging Marvel superhero in next month's "Captain America: Civil War," takes over the role from Andrew Garfield, who appeared in the Marc Webb-helmed "The Amazing Spider-Man" films and who, in turn, took over the role from Tobey Maguire, who starred in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" film series in the early 2000s.
While the task of taking on such an iconic role must have been a pretty heavy one, the fact that "Civil War" is currently receiving positive acclaim must have taken some of the weight off Holland's shoulders.

In an interview with Hey U Guys during the European premiere of "Civil War" in London, Holland admitted that he was initially daunted by the prospect of taking on the Spider-Man mantle. The actor also said that it was "very difficult" not to copy what Maguire and Garfield did in their films because what they had done was "so brilliant."
Nevertheless, Holland did make the new Spider-Man his own. Explaining how his take differs from previous portrayals, the actor said, "I think our main difference is trying to make Peter feel like a kid and in the film you see a kid reacting to meeting the Avengers for the first time."
"I think that's one of the things people love about these films is seeing real life occurrences happen in these crazy films and that's exactly what happens to Peter in his house," he added.
Meanwhile, Marvel Studio's president Kevin Feige also spoke to Hey U Guys and revealed that Sony, who holds the rights to Spider-Man, is giving Marvel creative control on the iconic Marvel character's upcoming stand-alone film.
"…They really are supportive in allowing us to make the creative decisions to make that movie, but they've been great partners, and uh, so far so good on that movie," Feige said.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" hits screens July 7, 2017.
