St. Louis Rams News 2015: Offensive Coordinator Frank Cignetti Fired in First Move to Improve Team's Offense

Frank Cignetti spent a good three years with the St. Louis Rams as offensive coordinator; a position that basically coaches the team's quarterbacks. But on Monday, the team announced that Cignetti has been fired by the same man who took him in 2012, Jeff Fisher, with assistant head coach Rob Boras taking over for the remainder of the season.

The move to unload Cignetti is viewed by league experts as the first of many for a St. Louis team looking to take another direction in the hope of improving their offense. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Fisher admitted that it was time to move on. "The blame's not to fall on Cignetti's shoulders, but it's the way this business works. Players contributed, coaches contributed, everybody contributed, but we have to move in a different direction," he added. The head coach also said that they came up with the decision based on the team's lack of production.

Together with general manager Les Snead, Fisher couldn't come up with a kind of offense that can keep up with the league's elite. First, it was former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer who left to join the college ranks, and now Cignetti is out.

Obviously, the team needs some upgrade, not just in the coaching staff. They haven't produced enough touchdowns to win enough games this season. Although they made a big move in the offseason by signing Nick Foles, that hasn't been a productive gamble as of this point, considering the coaching staff has been starting Case Keenum.

Boras, though, may produce results that Cignetti couldn't, there is still some doubt as to how competent he can be, especially with the fact that the last time he assumed the role as offensive coordinator was during his stint at UNLV more than 10 years ago.

The Rams are currently at 4-8 with a very slim chance of making it further to the postseason. Perhaps what they have to focus on right now is getting back to square one and draw something up to get rid of their offensive woes.
