'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Spoilers: Did Kylo Ren Try To Kill Luke Skywalker?
If there's one thing that the newest "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" trailer revealed to fans, it's that the film will delve more into the story of Kylo Ren. This includes his time in the Jedi Academy and his eventual betrayal that left Luke Skywalker devastated.
While his parentage was among the central plot points of the first film, not much was revealed about Ren's history with his uncle. Now, however, it looks like fans will get the full coverage on why he turned his back on the Jedi.
"I've seen this raw strength only once before. It didn't scare me enough then. It does now," was Luke's ominous words in the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" trailer. This was followed by a scene of him coming out of the rubble as his fledgling Jedi order lay smoldering. It seems that Rian Johnson wants fans to ask the question: did Kylo Ren try to kill his uncle during his betrayal?
Ren, as revealed in the first film, is the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, as well as Luke's nephew which means he was strong in The Force. This was probably why he was among the first Jedi trainees following the fall of the Galactic Empire. However, for a reason yet to be revealed, he betrayed his fellow trainees, killing them forcing a devastated Luke to exile on Ahch-To.
However, the new footage of Luke's mechanical hand emerging from the rubble suggests Luke was attacked by Kylo Ren. While this might not seem surprising given that he killed his father in "The Force Awakens," however, his reasons for doing are still unclear.
One possibility is that he can only unlock his true potential if he dispatches his family as the trailer also suggests he is going to kill his mother Leia. Snoke himself described Ren as "raw and untamed" when he found him which could suggest that it was him who turned him to the dark side prior to his betrayal.
Whatever the case, all of it will be answered when "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hits theaters this Dec. 13.
