'Suicide Squad' Spoilers: Jared Leto's Version Of The Joker Was Enough To Spook Even The Film's Director

Jared Leto's portrayal of the psychopathic DC villain, the Joker, in the forthcoming film "Suicide Squad" was so spot-on and spooky that it even scared the film's director, David Ayer.

"Big time," Ayer told USA Today. "The hairs stand up on the back of your neck."

Leto took over the role of the Joker from the late actor Heath Ledger, whose take on the villain earned him an Academy Award.

Ayer, who said that he grew up watching the 1960s Batman show on television, said, "If you're a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he's the best nemesis ever." "Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me," he revealed.

As for Leto's characterization, Ayer revealed that he was so into his role that people on the set of "Suicide Squad" "kept their distance" from the actor. Ayer said, "There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the power on screen he has."

Meanwhile, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" director Zack Snyder, who admits that he never saw Leto on the "Suicide Squad" set but knew all about "the crazy stuff" that was happening, said, "You're going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don't know that everyone's ready for but I think it will be amazing."

"Suicide Squad" dropped its first full-length trailer last week and it showed the antihero team of Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Will Smith), Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), George Harkness/Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Chato Santana/El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Waylon Jones/Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana (Karen Fukuhara) being taken from prison to take on the bad guys. The trailer also revealed June Moon/Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Batman (Ben Affleck) will have a small role in the film.

"Suicide Squad" hits theaters on August 5.
