Surface Mini Really Existed, Microsoft Confirms

The Surface Mini really existed, it just did not make it to the market, Microsoft finally confirmed.

Last year, rumors surfaced about Microsoft's plan to release a Surface Mini, but many must have wondered why the gadget was never released. Microsoft Surface Chief Panos Panay finally revealed that the Surface Mini really existed, but the firm decided not to launch it, according to Tech Times.

In fact, Panay confessed that he used to keep the 7-inch Surface Mini by his bedside so he could take down notes and compose email messages whenever an idea struck him. It is worth noting, however, that Panay used the past tense when referring to the tablet, an indication that the Surface Mini will remain a thing of the past, The Verge reports.

In an interview with Wired, Panay admitted that the Surface Mini was originally designed to go against Apple's iPad Mini. However, the tech giant later on decided to release the Surface Book instead — a wise move, it seemed. The powerful laptop immediately went out of stock just four days after pre-order began, the report details.

In April 2014, Chinese electronic goods seller Vostrostone ignited rumors about the impending release of the Surface Mini when it posted a listing on Amazon for the device's accessories. The following month, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro 3, but the tech giant must have forgotten to edit the user manual, as it still contained references to a smaller device.

In July, information was leaked about Microsoft restarting the production of the Surface Mini and that the gadget was scheduled to be launched in the summer. However, the rumor was quickly proven to be untrue.
Panay has nothing but good words for the Surface Mini, and he said he loves the gadget so much, the report adds.

"It was like a Moleskine. It was awesome," the Times quotes Panay's statement to Wired.

Unfortunately, a consumer-ready Surface Mini will never reach the market. Nevertheless, it will be remembered as one of the best gadgets that the market never had.
