Tesla Model 3 Delivery Delay Latest News Update: Automaker Misses Delivery Goals
It seems like Elon Musk's gamble didn't pay off as Tesla Model 3 deliveries missed their projected goals by a long shot. Despite promising to increase total vehicle numbers for 2017, investors are still unhappy with the automaker's performance.
Back in July, Musk tweeted that the Model 3 has passed all regulatory requirements ahead of schedule. After announcing that the first 30 customers would receive their vehicles on July 28, Musk stated that production will grow exponentially and that by August they should be able to produce 100 Tesla Model 3 and by September, above 1,500.
Altogether, Musk's third-quarter production forecast would be around 1,630 vehicles which means they were off by a whopping 84 percent. With the results way bellow his forecast, there's no doubt that this is one of the many thinks Musk will have to address in the next investor meeting.
According to the Tesla, production bottlenecks are to blame for failing to meet its goals. In a statement to the BBC, the company revealed that while their California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory were able to operate at a high rate, a handful of other factories took longer to activate than they expected.
It shouldn't worry investors too much though, as Tesla has a proven track record of maintaining production speed once it gets going. Deliveries of its other models for this quarter were also on par and are expected to surpass the past two quarters of the year with 14,065 Model S and 11,865 Model X delivered.
"We had previously indicated that second-half Model S and X deliveries would likely exceed first-half deliveries of 47,077, but we now expect to exceed that by several thousand vehicles," Tesla said in a press release. "In total, we expect to deliver about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017, which would be a 31 percent increase over 2016."
Despite the hiccups though, the company emphasized there are no fundamental issues with the Tesla Model 3 production or supply chain.
