'The Last of Us Part II' Latest News: Sony Debuts New Trailer; Sequel to Feature Ellie's Mother?

A new trailer for "The Last of Us Part II" was released during Paris Games Week, and fans are already theorizing about the identity of one character.

The particularly violent trailer shows an unnamed woman being dragged and hanged by Emily. As she prepares to cut through the woman's stomach with a knife, similar to other hanging corpses with open abdomens, she is interrupted by the arrival of a girl named Yara. It is clear that Yara and Emily do not take kindly to one another. When Emily asks her where "the other apostate" is, she simply spits at her face. This causes Emily to command her goons to "clip her wings," which is to break her arms with a hammer.

One of the men then proceeds to break Yara's left arm, but before they can break the other, arrows come flying through the air. The arrows take out one of the men, and Yara kills the other. After killing Emily with the help of the unnamed woman, a badly injured Yara orders Lev to cut the woman free. Lev initially protests, saying she is "one of them," but he eventually abides after Yara insists.

Several fans have already begun speculating about the identity of the unnamed woman. According to a theory posited by IGN, the woman could be Ellie's mother. This is based on a previous clue developer Naughty Dog gave, teasing that the woman's name consists of four letters. Ellie's mother's name is Anna, and the trailer hints that the woman in the trailer is pregnant.

The trailer is certainly unique since it does not feature protagonists Joel and Ellie. There have been speculations drawn from a previous trailer that Joel is already dead in the sequel. However, Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie, previously posted a photo of her and Troy Baker, who plays Joel, on Twitter. The photo features the two in motion capture suits, ready to play their roles in the video game.

"The Last of Us Part II" will be released in 2018.
