'The Mayor' Season 1 News, Air Date: New Promo Previews Courtney Rose's Unconventional Politics

ABC has released a new promo for its upcoming comedy series, "The Mayor."

For those who are unaware, "The Mayor" focuses on Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall) and his sudden rise to become mayor of his hometown. Rose, a young rapper, initially ran for the position in order to promote his music career. However, he unexpectedly won and now has to navigate the job with the help of Valentina (Lea Michele), his chief of staff.

The promo, titled "Freestyle," opened with the announcement of Courtney's win on television. He and his friends were understandably surprised. The clip also previewed some music and Valentina trying to teach Courtney about procedures. His unconventional terms confused some of his colleagues, but he quickly clarified that a "V-bomb" means "veto."

Executive producer Daveed Diggs, who is known for his role in the 2015 musical "Hamilton," composes original raps for the show. A first look at the series, which featured more scenes and some interviews, was released earlier this year by ABC.

"He has a passion for music, but he also has an understanding that something needs to be changed within his community," Hall says of his character in the video.

Yvette Nicole Brown plays Courtney's mother, Dina Rose, who is supportive of her son's career choice as both a rapper and the mayor. The clip showed Courtney being frustrated with his music career not taking off, which leads to him campaigning to become mayor. In an election debate, he scoffed at his opponent's so-called devotion to restore the city commons and pointed out that the area was far from being restored.

"I mean, there is so much trash, Bravo gave it a second season," Courtney joked, which gained the approval of the audience.

Equipped with the support of his friends, mother and chief of staff, Courtney may just change his town for the better.

"Courtney leads with his heart. Valentina is the brains," Michele said at Paley Center's PaleyFest Fall TV Previews recently (via Variety). "She's tough, but they learn from each other and grow."

"The Mayor" season 1 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
