'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 News: Show Boss Sheds Light On Elena Gilbert's Return; Details For 'The Originals' Crossover Revealed

The CW's hit supernatural drama TV series "The Vampire Diaries" is yet to return to the small screens for the second half of Season 7. A handful of new updates for the show, however, have been pouring down in the past week.

One of the most resonant issues that fans love to keep talking about is the comeback of Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert. Julie Plec, a close friend of the actress and executive producer of the series, previously revealed that she's more than hopeful to see Dobrev reprise her iconic TV role.

In an interview, Plec told TVLine that their plan is to have Elena return to Mystic Falls when the series is finally close to its end. Since "The Vampire Diaries" doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down, the heroine won't be coming back anytime soon.

However, the showrunner said that should there be something catastrophic that would happen to the other characters in the story, more specifically to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), then the writers would have to revive the former protagonist.

According to Plec, "There is still a chapter of Elena's story left to be told."

"I'll take Dobrev for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story," she went on to tell the media outlet.

The EP, meanwhile, once again emphasized that "The Vampire Diaries," isn't really just about the popular girl from Mystic Falls but also about the struggles of the Salvatore brothers.

Speaking of the male protagonists, Plec recently told the publication the details about the highly-anticipated crossover with the show's spinoff, "The Originals."

The show boss revealed to TVLine that "the crossover was born out Stefan needing a place to escape."

"He's on the run. He needs to go somewhere where magic can't find him, and we realized he can go to New Orleans where there's that bar where magic doesn't work," she explained.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7B is slated to return to The CW this Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.
