Ubisoft Talks Aftermath of 'Assassin's Creed' Movie
Ubisoft seems to have made the most out of its efforts to expand its popular "Assassin's Creed" franchise to other entertainment mediums. The French publisher took all the lesson from the film adaptation's subpar performance in the box office and hopefully, take them into account the next time one of their intellectual properties are to be adapted to film.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke with IGN at this year's Gamescom and talked about everything they have learned from entrusting its IP to outside talent for last year's Assassin's Creed movie. One thing that hit them was they didn't have as much control as they thought when it came to the film's launch.
"What we realized with the launch of the movie is that we thought we had more control, but... we didn't have as much control as we thought," said Guillemot.
While they did have a say with regards to what goes into the film's script, when it came to the release date, Ubisoft was at the mercy of the market. Guillemot then went on to highlight the differences between the film and video game industry in terms of collaborations. Differences that might have contributed to the "Assassin's Creed" movie's dismal underwhelming performance.
"In the video game industry, when you're not ready, you push the date," he explained. "In the movie industry, you don't push the date. So if something is not going to be perfect, you can't change it."
Guillemot said that he doesn't want Ubisoft to be put in the same situation again and so wants to ensure it has more control over its properties for future collaborations.
The publisher is currently undergoing talks with Netflix to produce a series based on one of their games. Additionally, Ubisoft Motion Pictures is also planning to make film adaptations of "Splinter Cell" and "The Division" starring Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal respectively.
