UFC Fight News 2016: Tony Ferguson vs. Michael Johnson Rematch Added to UFC 197
Tony Ferguson will have another crack at an Ultimate Fighting Championship title as the promotion announced his addition to UFC 197, and he'll be going up against Michael Johnson on March 5 in a Las Vegas card.
The American Ferguson is currently competing in the lightweight division for the UFC, ranked as a top 5 contender in the said weight class. He also was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 13 and has been on fire as of late, winning all his seven last fights. As a matter of fact, the last time he lost was three years ago.
But his problem is he will be facing the very same fighter who last defeated him in the person of Michael Johnson. Both fighters faced off in the undercard of the FOX UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs Miller back in 2012. After taking the fight on Johnson in the first round, Ferguson couldn't keep up and ran out of steam to lose via unanimous decision.
Johnson, on the other hand, came close to earning a title shot before losing back-to-back against Beneil Dariush and Nate Diaz. Therefore, this fight serves as his attempted redemption. A win will propel him back to the top 5 in the lightweight division.
Ferguson currently sports an MMA record of 20-3 and 10-1 in the UFC. His only loss was to that of Johnson. His opponent is 16-10 in MMA and 8-6 in the UFC.
UFC 197 will be one of the most-anticipated fight cards for mixed martial arts in the first quarter of the year, with Rafael dos Anjos taking on Conor McGregor as the main event and Holly Holm vs Miesha Tate featured as the co-main event.
Here's a look at the other fights that have been officially confirmed:
- Erick Silva vs. Nordine Taleb
- Corey Anderson vs. Tom Lawlor
- Darren Elkins vs. Chas Skelly
- Jim Miller vs. Diego Sanchez
