UFC News 2015: Medical Suspension for UFC 194 Fighters Could Last Six Months
The UFC 194 is as spectacular as it can be; a fitting end to the year for mixed martial arts in general. But the gruesomeness of combat sports naturally leads to injuries, some of them so serious that fighters will have to wait it out half a year just to get healed and be able to fight again. This would be the case for the fight card's biggest winner, Conor McGregor, and a bunch of other fighters.
The UFC revealed that McGregor is one of the several fighters in the same fight event who is likely going to get a six-month medical suspension. McGregor famously knocked out longtime featherweight champ Jose Aldo, doing it in less than 14 seconds. Although the fight ended before everyone could warm up their seats, McGregor actually might have injured his left wrist.
Aside from his, other fighters are also going to take some time off by UFC's mandate, including the new middleweight champ, Luke Rockhold, Chris Weidman, Ronaldo Souza, and Urijah Faber. Rockhold is reportedly suffering from a left ankle issue, Weidman on both feet, Souza left forearm, and Faber on multiple areas including right ankle, left knee, and left thumb.
There are cases, though, when fighters are able to come back sooner than what their medical suspensions provide since the injuries suffered right after fight night are later figured out to be not as serious.
The event last Dec.12, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, was an explosive one, with the main card's PPV returns expected to become of the highest selling this year.
According to McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, there's a good chance that his fighter will be able to heal his injuries in time for their planned fights in April and July. But if the medical suspensions are followed, he shouldn't be fighting until July.
