Velveeta Shortage Comes Weeks Before Super Bowl, Could Impact Football Parties

Football fans might have to forgo a popular processed cheese product for the Super Bowl after a spokesperson for the company that makes Velveeta cheese spread revealed a possible shortage.

Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore detailed a Velveeta shortage that could impact social gatherings in the coming weeks.

"It is possible consumers in any part of the country may not be able to find some Velveeta products on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Moore told NBC News.

Moore stated that a combination of higher demand and other factors experienced at various points along the supply chain is the cause behind the shortage.

"This is really a short-term situation that is more noticeable during our current period of increased seasonal demand," she said.

The shortage comes in the midst of a busy sporting period with a number of college football games in the past weeks as well as the start to the NFL playoffs. Velveeta loving fans may have to go without the favorite cheese spread for a while.

Still it seems stores in the New York City area have experienced the shortage first while supermarkets in the middle of the country do not seem to be affected yet.

"We just keep ordering it," Thomas Murray, manager for dairy at a Key Food in Brooklyn, told AdAge.com who first reported the cheese shortage. "It's not coming in."

"Three weeks ago, same problem," added Sam Ahmed, manager of a Met Foods supermarket also in Brooklyn.

However, reports indicate that stores in Hillside, N.J., Dover, Del., Chicago, Ill., and Salt Lake City, Utah, all stated that they had plenty of Velveeta on the shelves.

"We have not heard many complaints so far, but because we know Velveeta is a huge hit during football parties, we are doing everything we can to resolve any issues as soon as possible," Moore said.
