'Venom' Film News: Motion Capture To Be Used For Tom Hardy's Character

Actor Tom Hardy will reportedly perform motion capture in his portrayal of the titular character from the upcoming "Venom" film. This isn't much of a surprise considering he will be playing the role of a black alien symbiote with Spider-man's powers.

Hardy previously worked with masks covering his face and his eyes for many of his most famous films the most recent being "Mad Max: Fury Road." This means that being covered in sensors recording every movement of his body shouldn't be much of problem.

What is surprising is that it was confirmed by actor Andy Serkis who can only be described as a motion-capture savant. Serkis is best known for his performance capture roles comprising of motion capture acting, animation and voice work.

In an interview with Yahoo, Serkis revealed that Hardy will be performing motion-capture in an upcoming role. While he did not specify the role, it's pretty obvious considering that "Venom" is Hardy's only upcoming film which uses CGI (computer-generated imagery).

Serkis himself will be starring in a superhero film himself reprising his role as arms dealer Ulysses Klaue in the upcoming "Black Panther" movie. However, there is a chance that Sony might get Serkis for expertise with motion capture having played Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and Caesar in the "Planet of the Apes" series.

Sony Pictures originally announced their plans to develop multiple "Spider-Man" spinoffs alongside additional sequels of Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 2014. However, this was before they agreed to share the web-slinging superhero with Marvel Studios a year later.

While the studio no longer plans to continue with Webb's films, they still intend to push through with "Venom" with "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer is helming the project and "50 Shades of Grey" scribe Kelly Marcel writing the script.

The film is set to be released on Oct. 5, 2018.
