'Venom' Movie Cast News: Parks and Recreation Star Jenna Slate Joins
Sony is slowly building the list of actors and actresses that will star in the feature film adaptation of "Venom" and is now eyeing Jenna Slate. The "Spider-Man" spinoff will be directed by Tom Hardy and is the first in Sony's own Marvel Universe and is expected to be released in the latter half of 2018.
If negotiations go smoothly, Slate will be joined by Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed both of whom were already confirmed for the film. Like Williams and Ahmed, the "Parks and Recreation" star's character is being kept safely under wraps. However, reports suggest that she will play a scientist in the film.
Like the roles, the film's plot is also being kept secret although the anti-hero, alien symbiote-toting Eddie Brock will definitely appear as the titular character. There are also rumors that the villain Carnage will appear in the film and that Ahmed is said to have been slated for the role of Carnage. However, the 34-year-old actor landed a different mystery role and the studio is still for someone to play the psychotic symbiote.
Sony has made it clear that despite being a spinoff of the MCU-adjacent "Spider-Man," the web-slinging superhero will not make an appearance in the "Venom" standalone film. However, this doesn't mean that the alien will not do the opposite and appear in future Spidey flicks.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Venom appears in the Spider-Man story of the Marvel Comics universe. Eddie Brock, Peter Parker's rival Daily Bugle photographer merges with a mysterious alien goop and inherits some of Spider-Man's powers albeit with a nasty attitude and even nastier grin.
Since its inception in 1988, the character has been one of the most popular foes for Spidey and was even featured in the third film of the original "Spider-Man" trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. It would be interesting how Sony will reimagine the character in the standalone film, especially without his red and blue nemesis swooping around.
"Venom" is set to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
