Virtual Reality Entertainment A Big Hit At Game Developers Conference, San Francisco

Game Developers Conference, the world's biggest video game conference and expo for developers and members of the media, is currently being held this week at Moscone Center in San Francisco for its 30th annual gathering.

This year's focus is all about virtual reality. According to reports, over $2 billion has been poured in developing this new entertainment technology over the past years.

The spotlight being shed in this industry pushed GDC to create the Virtual Reality Developers Conference, a spin-off summit primarily focusing on VR technology.

Times of India reported that VRDC will highlight the events with titles like "Enabling Hands In VR" and "This is Your Brain on VR: A Look at The Psychology of Doing VR Right."

"It's another example of how VR is legitimate now," said Adam Orth, one of the distinguished VR developers present in the occasion.

Orth, who is behind the creation of Adr1ft, a first person VR experience that is slated to launch with the Rift, admits that a lot of people are still quite apprehensive with the new immersive medium.

"It's still so new, and there are still so many challenges to overcome," he said. "For instance, if someone is doing something simple as using a shovel in VR, how would that look and feel? It wouldn't look and feel like it does in a typical game. I'm looking forward to that, the challenge of creating normal things in abnormal scenarios."

But the statistics aren't lying. TOI cited that the number of VR projects have more than doubled in the past year. However, the concept is yet to assimilate itself into the mainstream.

"I think people are very interested and excited about it, but we've yet to see the mass adoption it will clearly need to take off," the media outlet cited Simon Carless, UBM Tech Game Network executive and GDC and VRDC organizer.

In related news, ABC announced that Sony has finally unveiled their headset, the PlayStation VR, which will be compatible with the PlayStation 4. The company announced that the tech gadget will start hitting the store shelves by October 2016 for the staggering price of $399.
