Washington Redskins News 2015: Derek Carrier Has Season-Ending Knee Injury

The Washington Redskins traded for Derek Carrier in the hope of improving the tight end depth of the team. But after only several months into the season, it looks like they will have to wait until next season for their prized acquisition to play and make an impact.

Head coach Jay Gruden announced on Monday that Carrier suffered a season-ending ACL and MCL injury in his right knee, which means that he no longer will be eligible to play this season. The 25-year-old tight end suffered the right knee injury after making a reception early in Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, where the Redskins won 24-21.

The former Beloit College standout was part of 10 offensive snaps against Chicago, but the injury kept him out of the game against the Cowboys on Monday. Later, the team made an official announcement, revealing the Achilles injuries.

Washington just couldn't get a break with successive injuries to its players, and what's even worse is that two others are already in the Injured Reserve — Niles Paul with an injured ankle, and Logan Paulsen with a toe injury.

When the team traded for Carrier back in August, the expectation was for him to replace the already injured Paul and Paulsen. Before the injury, he served as the second tight end option after Jordan Reed.

Gruden couldn't hide his disappointment after seeing another major contributor go down. "It's a big loss. Obviously, he's our true Y, remaining Y, blocking tight end. So Hamm's got to step up, Jordan Reed, or we'll have to go out and look for another one," the outspoken coach said.

Good thing, though, is the team still has Jordan Reed to rely on. The former third round pick of the 2013 NFL Draft is enjoying his best season as a pro so far, mustering 67 receptions, 694 yards, to go along with seven touchdowns so far.
