Will Smith wins Generation Award at 2016 MTV Movie Awards

The 25th MTV Movie Awards aired Sunday and honored the actor Will Smith with this year's Generation Award. Smith talked about what he thought when he found out he was being given the accolade.

"When I first heard that MTV wanted to give me the Generation Award, I thought that was like code for the 'Old Ass Dude Award'—'Congratulations, your best work is behind you, have fun,'" the actor−rapper tried to make fun of himself.

The Lonely Island performed in his honor doing a mash up of "Men in Black," the theme song of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," and 'Getting' Jiggy with It." Halle Berry and Queen Latifah each gave a tribute speech to praise and congratulate the 47-year-old actor.

Berry spoke of Smith as the "champion of diversity in Hollywood," citing it as one of the reasons she respected and admired the actor. She also said that the "Men in Black" star had been responsible for opening up possibilities for actors and showing everyone how a person of any color can do any role and win any award.

Latifah pointed out that Smith had been the first rapper to make it to the movies and make it big internationally as a star. She referred to the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" personality as the "king of huge blockbusters," mentioning his generosity to her personally and the community as well, and how he should be thanked for "opening up that door" for them.

Smith has been nominated for 17 times, went home with five, and has played host once on MTV's Movie Awards in the past.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart were the most hilarious co-hosts. The awarding was held at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank Saturday night when the event was taped. The Sunday broadcast was aired on MTV and simulcast on BET, Comedy Central, MTV2, CMT, TV Land, Logo, VH1, and VH1 Classic.

Smith's "Suicide Squad" which is showing August also debuted with an exclusive clip. Other awardees included Melissa McCarthy who received the Comedic Genius award and Charlize Theron, the Best Female Performance award on "Mad Max."
