British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he is "utterly appalled and saddened" by the "despicable attack" that took Abe's life.

"My thoughts are with his family and loved ones," Johnson tweeted.

"His global leadership through unchartered times will be remembered by many," he added in a follow-up tweet. "My thoughts are with his family, friends and the Japanese people. The UK stands with you at this dark and sad time."
