4 Do-It-Yourself Facials That'll Leave Your Skin and Wallet Happy
If you can’t afford weekly facials at the spa, it pays to get a little creative.
Using everyday ingredients found in your pantries and fridges, treat yourself this week to some much-welcomed luxury for a fraction of the cost with a few of these at-home facials.
Though the DIY treatments might not break the bank, it might call for another trip to your local grocery.
Warning: Make sure to do a patch test to test for allergies by applying ingredients on either the inner part of your wrist or elbow. Avoid eye area.
1. Brown Sugar Scrub
Known for its natural exfoliating properties, brown sugar works for all types of skin to make it smooth and soft. All you need is about 1 tablespoon of brown sugar. You can either add it to your HG cleanser, or mix it with about 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil or raw honey. Massage (gently is key) into the skin in a circular motion, concentrating on rough patches, for about 2-3 minutes and rinse with warm water.
Always splash face with cold water to tighten pores at the end.
2. Natural Honey and Oatmeal Mask (seals in moisture)
While the honey acts as a humectant and helps remove bacteria from the skin, the oatmeal helps control excess oil and removes dead skin cells. Take ¼ cup of oatmeal and cook with ½ cup of water. Set aside to cool. Then stir in about ¼ cup of honey and apply to face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Wash off with warm water.
You can also add plain yogurt to the mixture or a splash of lemon juice for an extra boost.
3. Egg Whites Mask
Perfect for oily skin and hailed as a mini “face lift,” egg whites are loved by many for its tightening properties and ability to quickly dry out stubborn acne. Simply separate the egg white from the yolk and whisk the remainder until it is frothy. Spread using your fingers or a clean makeup brush. Avoid eye area. Wash off as soon as mask is dry. Leaving it on too long may dry up the skin.
4. Papaya Skin Brightening Mask
Packed with Vitamin C and powerful antioxidants to control signs of aging, this mask will lighten the skin and reduce fine lines, helping naturally renew your skin. Mash the papaya in a bowl with a fork and apply to face for 15 minutes. You can add honey as well or milk. Wash with warm water and pat dry.
It’s important to always follow up your facials with a good, gentle moisturizer. Masks should not be used more than twice a week.
