58-Year-Old Woman Pregnant With Daughter's Child

A 58-year-old post-menopausal woman is expected to give birth to her granddaughter early next month.

Julia Navarro, originally from Peru and currently living in Utah, volunteered to be a surrogate after her daughter suffered around a dozen miscarriages.

"As a family, we have to help each other," Navarro told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Lorena McKinnon, the 32-year-old daughter, had first turned to a friend to be a potential surrogate but after that plan fell through, Navarro volunteered.

Navarro was successfully implanted with her daughter's embryo, though she was told there was a 45 chance of success because of her age. There has been no complications or even morning sickness ever since.

Ahead of the procedure, Navarro had to take hormone shots for three months since she had been menopausal for some 12 years.

Due in February, the baby – who is to be named Myla – will be Navarro's first grandchild.

"I was praying, 'If this baby works, I am going to help others,'" she told the local tribune. Thanking God for the opportunity, she said she also wants to donate money to orphans in Peru.
