Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., joined Johnson in sending a letter to Biden Wednesday, stating Israel faces an “existential” and “multi-front threat.” The Republican leaders warned that tension between Israel and the U.S. “risks emboldening Israel’s enemies” and could undermine the trust other U.S. allies have in the country.

On Thursday, McConnell delivered remarks on the Senate floor about aid to Israel. He noted that “War is Hell,” and it impacts noncombatants. McConnell explained how the U.S., even under the Biden administration, has made mistakes that have inadvertently killed civilians.

McConnell said that Israel “goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties,” often risking the lives of its soldiers to do so. The Republican lawmaker stressed that Israel’s enemies, however, “follow a different code.”

He said Hamas “exploits human suffering” because they know “useful idiots” on college campuses will side with terrorists, and it can force the president to choose between supporting an ally or satisfying his political base.

“If the commander-in-chief can’t muster the political courage to stand up to radicals on his left flank and stand up for an ally at war, the consequences will be grave,” McConnell said. “Other allies who rely on ‘ironclad’ guarantees from America will question our commitment."

“Nations on the fence, in the middle of a major-power competition for influence, will look elsewhere for their own security,” he added. “And our enemies will be emboldened.”
