American Music Awards Winners: Adele Wins Big, Taylor Swift Shines

The American Music Awards have recognized the most influential artists of 2011 last night in Los Angeles with big wins for artists such as Adele and Taylor Swift.

Today’s biggest music stars hit the red carpet as well as the stage in a number of performances, including the opening performance by AMA award winner Nicki Minaj. The “Super Bass” singer received Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album with “Pink Friday.”

Taylor Swift took home the most coveted Artist of the Year American Music Award, while other winners included Bruno Mars who earned Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist and Usher receiving Favorite Male Soul Artist.

British singing sensation Adele was a top winner for the night, but was unable to attend the ceremony due to throat surgery from which she is still recovering. The 23-year-old received three American Music Awards, including Female Artist, Adult Contemporary Artist, and Favorite Rock/Pop Album with “21” – the best-selling album in the U.S. this year.

Many of last night’s nominees also gave performances including The Band Perry who sang “If I Die Young” from their self-titled album and LMFAO who closed the show with their song “Party Rock Anthem.”

Recently split J. Lo and Marc Anthony both appeared at the awards ceremony last night. The parents of 3-year-old twins Emme and Max continue to do business together through their reality television talent competition, “Q’VIVA The Chosen,” which is set to air in 21 countries through Latin America next year.

J. Lo received the AMA for Favorite Latin Artist and took to the stage again for a performance with Pitbull which earned her huge cheers from the crowd. Minutes after her exit, Anthony followed with his performance of “Rain Over Me” alongside Pitbull.

In addition, artists Beyonce, Rihanna, and the Foo Fighters each took home one AMA each last night.

Other performances included Katy Perry singing her new single, “The One That Hot Away.” The pink-haired singer also took home an award last night for Special Achievement.

In a unique pairing, Maroon 5 sang “Moves Like Jagger” together with Christina Aguilera. Maroon 5 earned an AMA for Favorite Pop/Rock Band.
