Carrie Underwood appeared on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday and performed her powerful ballad "Something in the Water."

The faith-filled song, which is Underwood's first new release since 2012's album "Blown Away," includes major Christian themes such as conversion, baptism, and keeping the faith, and it remains a staple on Billboard top charts. Performing "Something in the Water" live on "The Tonight Show," Underwood powerfully belted out lyrics that include: "I followed that preacher down to the river and now I am changed, and now I'm stronger, there must have been something in the water."

"Something in the Water" is featured on Underwood's first compilation album, "Greatest Hits #1," which hit stores on Tuesday. The singer has described the song as a "joyous, uplifting song, basically about changing your life" and defended her inclusion of faith in her music.

"After I released 'Jesus Take the Wheel,' people started saying, 'Oh, it's kind of risky. You're coming out with a religious song,'" the singer explained to Taste of Country. "And I was thinking, 'Really?' I grew up in Oklahoma, I always had a close relationship with God. I never thought it was risky in the least. If anything, I thought it was the safest thing I could do."

In a separate interview with Glamour magazine, Underwood addressed atheist critics, maintaining that "country music is different."

"You have that Bible Belt-ness about it," she added of her industry. "I'm not the first person to sing about God, Jesus, faith [or] any of that, and I won't be the last. And it won't be the last for me, either. If you don't like it, change the channel."

As for "Something in the Water," Underwood said it describes an "a-ha moment."

"[It's about] kind of having that a-ha moment, to waking up and your life being different from that moment forward," the singer noted, according to Taste of Country.

Before her "Tonight Show" performance on Tuesday, the 31-year-old who is expecting her first child, told the show's host that she and her husband Mike Fisher sing to their unborn baby.

"I feel like he hears me singing, whether he would like that or not, because that's what I do and he's in there constantly," the singer explained. "I do feel like I have to sing good all the time, even if I'm in my car driving, I have to make it good because he's listening. He's always in there."
