'Detective Pikachu' Movie Cast News: Legendary Pictures Looking To Big Action Stars To Play Titular Character
A big action star is probably the last thing some fans would think when it comes to who would play the titular character in the upcoming "Detective Pikachu" movie. But it appears that is exactly what Legendary Pictures is looking for and topping the list of potential actors is none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Last year, Legendary announced their plans to make a live-action Pokémon movie. Specifically, they revealed that it will be an adaptation of the video game "Great Detective Pikachu."
While the iconic Pokemon has donned his fair share of hats over the years, sporting Sherlock's iconic deerstalker hat and solving mysteries is a pretty new gig for him.
But while it's not that hard to get on board with the prospect of Pikachu busting bad guys with a human sidekick, it's a bit surprising that Legendary opted to adopt a spin-off game instead of the many anime iterations or even the core "Pokemon" titles.
Should the studio opt for Johnson, it wouldn't be much of a surprise. After all, he has had his share of fun movies where he starred or lent his voice to with the most recent being Disney's "Moana" where he played the demigod Maui.
Legendary has yet to reveal any details regarding their casting choice, however, as they are also eyeing other big names. Aside from Johnson, the studio is reportedly considering Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Mark Wahlberg for the titular role.
So far, none of the above actors have met with Legendary but their choices do provide an idea of what they are looking for the film. For one thing, the Detective Pikachu movie will replace the cutesy voice Pikachu has in the game and animated shows and movies with those of a gruff action star.
There is currently no release date set for the "Detective Pikachu" movie.
