The trailer for the upcoming drama "Gimme Shelter" was released this week, revealing the extent of Vanessa Hudgen's transformation for the film.

The former Disney star portrays an impoverished and pregnant teen in the film alongside Brendan Fraser, Rosario Dawson, James Earl Jones and Ann Dowd.

Last month, The Christian Post offered readers the first look at Hudgens in character as Apple Bailey. However, the trailer for "Gimme Shelter" is now available here.

Hudgens is barely recognizable in her powerful role as Apple, who flees from her drug-addicted mother [Dawson] in a plight to save her unborn child.

The 24-year-old actress appears transformed from the glamorous red carpet star she is known to be. Instead, Hudgens purposefully opted for heavy eye makeup, a short-cropped hairdo and masculine clothing in the film.

Also shockingly transformed is Dawson who portrays the abusive mother of Hudgens character. The actress is best known for her role in "Kids" as well as "Men in Black II," among others, but her role in "Gimme Shelter" sees Dawson as a haggard, angry and negligent mother.

"When I was eight, I was taken away from my mother when she was arrested for drugs," Vanessa's character narrates in a voice over during the trailer for "Gimme Shelter."

"By the time I was 12, I was in my 10th foster home," the voice-over continues.

The film is based on a true story which follows 16-year-old Apple's struggle for survival and search for redemption after the harsh realities of life on the street. Along her quest for shelter and an opportunity in life, Apple is taken into a home in a suburban shelter for teens.

Several Sources is the name of the real-life shelter that took Apple in, and where she was able to choose life for her baby and developed friendships. Also, it was there that Apple lived with her baby before she got on her own two feet.

"Sometimes you have to leave home to find your family," the tagline in the trailer reads.

"Gimme Shelter" is scheduled for release on Jan. 24.
