How to Share Your Faith Using Alicia Keyes' 'No One'

In Alicia Keyes' hit song, No One, it's clear she's singing about a guy/girl romantic relationship. And while the guy/girl thing can definitely dominate your world when you're in the midst of it, (or even when you're not, but are longing to be...), try setting aside the romance angle on this song temporarily. No One provides a glimpse into some deeper relational truths - truths that speak to any healthy, vibrant, passionate relationship, including our relationship with God.

The lyrics to No One capture the essence of the human longing for meaningful relationship - for love, trust, comfort, faith and soul satisfaction. Longings that a personal, vibrant, growing relationship with God can fill.

"You and me together through the days and nights.
I don't worry 'cause
Everything's going to be alright.
People keep talking they can say what they like
But all I know is everything's going to be alright."

As humans we long for safety and security and the assurance that "everything's going to be alright." Yet often the world doesn't feel like a safe place. Unless you know God is at work in it. Listen in on what the Bible has to say about God working through even the tough stuff in our lives:

And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (Romans 8:27-28, NLT)

Check out these lyrics from No One that talk about faith:

"No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you, you, you
Can get in the way of what I feel for you.

I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have.
I know people will try to divide something so real.
So till the end of time I'm telling you there ain't no one..."

God's Word promises us that as believers, we can have total confidence in our relationship with God. Nothing can separate us from God. Romans 8:38-39 describes the permanence of this overwhelming and incredible spiritual relationship this way:

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So the next time you and your friends hear Alicia Keyes' song No One, remind yourself of God's incredible relational promises. And use it to launch into a spiritual conversation with your friends who don't know Jesus. Here are some ideas that might help move the conversation toward God-talk:

Challenge your friends to set aside the guy/girl relational dimension of No One and think about the lyrics in a broader relational sense. We all long for deep and meaningful relationships with others. What do you see as the components of a deep and satisfying relationship? Love? Trust? Honesty? Faithfulness? What else?
In your experience is it easy or hard to find relationships that are deep and lasting over the long haul?
Ask your friends whether God plays a role in meeting their relational longings? Why or why not? Listen, then share about your relationship with God. Describe how it involves soul satisfying elements like love, trust, faith, comfort and assurance.
God's promise that no one can separate us from His love is Good News for a hurting world, hungry for deep and satisfying relationships. Let's do all we can to share His promises with those around us.
