Ice Cream Sandwich Forces Twitter to Update Android App

Twitter has made some updates to its Android client that will allow it to work more efficiently with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich as well as correct some bugs.

The new app, known as Twitter for Android version 3.1 features some improvements and is currently available as a free download in the Android market.

It brings back the handy swipe shortcut that allows users to swipe a tweet in their home timeline to reply to, retweet, favorite or share it, or view the Twitter user's profile, without leaving their timeline.

It also implements a new confirmation alert into the Find Friends feature that clearly explains that uploading contacts' email addresses and phone numbers onto the Twitter cloud is only used for finding your friends on Twitter. This only works if they have made themselves discoverable by email or phone number on the system.

Twitter has specifically tweaked this version in order to run social networking service at optimum level on devices that use Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, according to the company. It also will work better on the Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet, Barnes & Noble Nook Color and Nook Tablet thanks to the updates made to the application.

Twitter plans to provide users with more information on the changes it has made via its blog. The company has also released a dedicated client made for a Google TV device.

The iOS version has also received some updates that include a swipe shortcut, copy and paste between tweets and profiles, press and hold actions on links in tweet details, font size settings, direct message improvements and many more.

Twitter has also added the option of using the application in Turkish for iOS users. This Apple version is known as Twitter for iOS 4.1. It is currently available for free download in the App store.
