iPhone 4S Release Date: 8MP Camera Made by SONY
Just days after the release of the iPhone 4S, developers and commentators are divulging every detail about the fifth-generation Apple smartphone that they can find.
Many speculate that the highly talked about 8 MP camera on the iPhone 4S was made by Sony.
Several tech websites have done tear downs of the iPhone 4S; taking the phone apart in order to detail the parts inside.

ChipWorks in particular got an infrared view of the image sensor within the smartphone and have determined that Sony has at least contributed to the development of the 8 MP camera in the iPhone 4S.
"In order to get our readers the device manufacturer as soon as possible, rather than going through a fuming sulfuric acid chip de-processing we chose to use our infrared microscope to look through the structure of this image sensor," ChipWork detailed.
"What you see are the die markings on the base layer of the image sensor. The image isn’t beautiful, but it’s enough to tell us that Sony is in our particular iPhone 4S."
They have also determined that OmniVision may have also been involved in the development of the 8 MP camera in the iPhone 4S.
A comparison to the image sensor in the iPhone 4 shows that the devices are extremely similar in structure.
The iPhone 4 is also well known for its highly efficient 5 MP camera, which was developed by OmniVision.
Developers suspect that the Sonly and ChipWorks may have worked together to develop the 8 MP camera in the iPhone 4S.
At the "Let's Talk iPhone" media event on Oct. 4, where the iPhone 4S was unveiled, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, detailed that one of the most vital features of the new smartphone is its camera.
“For the iPhone 4S, we set our sights on competing not with other phones, but with point and shoot cameras," Schiller said.
