iPhone 5 Release Date: LIVE - New iOS 5 to be Launched Oct. 12

Numerous sites are blogging live from the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event in California. Currently Tim Cook is talking about the new Lion iOS released a couple of months ago. About 6 million of copies of Lion have been downloaded since.

“It took Windows 7 20 weeks to reach 20 percent of their install base, we did this in two weeks," Cook said. "Our customers love it, our competitors are trying to copy it. It isn't that easy.

"The MacBook Pro and iMac are the number one best selling notebook and desktop in the US."

He went on: "Despite everybody and their brother trying to compete with the iPad, 3 out of 4 tablets sold in the US is an iPad."

"We have a great solution for notifications in iOS 5. It just subtly comes up at the top and doesn't interrupt you," said Cook, as blogged by Costa.

“iMessage lets you send text, photos, videos and give you delivery receipts. imessages are pushed to all of your devices. They are sent over 3G and WiFi. You messages are securely encrypted end to end.”

“Reminders let you set up a geo fence around where you are, so you can have it remind you to pick up your laundry when you leave work.”

Tim Cook then went on to say: “Let's talk about iOS 5".

Regarding the camera, he said "We know how popular the camera is on the iPhone. So now if you double click on the home button you are taken directly to the camera app and are ready to take a photo."

The AE/AF lock is now built into the iOS camera.

Regarding the Game Center, Cook said “It has only been out for about a year, but it has been a huge hit."

He spoke about the Safari: “I shows you the stats and showed you how popular it is. First up is reader. We take the story that you are on and format it specifically for you device. If you aren't ready to read a story now, just add it to your reading list ad add it later."

For mail, Costa reports that Cook said “We have mail better in a number of ways. We have added rich text formatting. We will let you flag messages and allow you to search the text of messages. Next up is PC Free.”

“It used to be that in order to have an iOS device you needed to connect it to a computer. Now you can operate the device without needed a computer and get all of your updates wirelessly.”

The new iOS will be available October 12, next week.
