Two Chip Makers Vie for A6 Supremacy
The next iPhone is on the way, and its processor will no doubt be the revolutionary A6 quad core, the fastest piece of technology ever put under the hood of an Apple mobile device.
iPhone 5, iPad 3: Apple Begins A6 Chip Production
Apple filed an injunction against Samsung in Australia last week, but despite their differences, it appears the two tech icons will be working together to create Steve Jobs’ final brainchild, the iPhone 5.
Apple's A6 processing chip is currently being produced by Samsung at the company's Austin, Texas manufacturing plant.
However, a manufacturing rivalry between Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung is in full swing, so while waiting for TSMC to get up to speed etching the chips, Samsung has been going full steam ahead. TSMC has reportedly begun its trial manufacturing of Apple's A6 chip as well.
The processing chip is said to be the main component for Apple's rumored iPhone 5 and the forthcoming iPad 3.
Unidentified industry insiders spoke to the Korea Times who revealed: "Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner. Samsung Electronics will apply its advanced 28-nanometer processing technology to produce qualified A6 mobile AP's. TSMC will provide customized chips with designs from Apple, however, the volume will be very small."
Rumors have it the iPhone 5 will feature a 5-inch screen and will be launched, according to analysts, in 2012. Both iPhone 5 and iPad 3 and will carry the A6 quad-core processor.
