Smartphones Responsible for Porn Consumption Increase?

Smartphones have given people the option to access the web from anyplace with signal and one organization believes that this luxury has resulted in people spending more time consuming porn on the Internet.

The Korea Times reported that officials at the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) say that the increased consumption of porn on the Internet results from "people being enabled to carry liquid crystal displays in their pockets."

For now, the KCC lacks statistical ground to back this claim, but it says with confidence that men in Korea "aren't spending all their mobile time on the Internet checking emails or browsing the web."

The media outlet quoted officials saying, "Of the top mobile websites accessed through mobile handsets last month, dozens of them were sexually explicit. With advanced technologies...an increasing number of smartphone users are accessing porn sites, which brings forth the problem of addiction..."

“Max,” a 31-year-old New Yorker who requested his identity not be revealed, told The Christian Post that his smartphone has enabled him to watch porn discretely even if his wife is by his side. He shares his concern that his daily access to porn websites not only causes him to lose track of important responsibilities, but also lose valuable time.

"I easily spend 30 percent of the time on my mobile on porn," he confessed.

The problem is pervasive and not restricted to geography.

A survey conducted by LG last month found that over 25 percent of male Britons use their smartphones to access porn sites. And at least one out of six men has used the smartphone to flirt with other “potential partners” despite being in a relationship.

According to the Korea Times article, the KCC shared that consuming porn on mobile phones does not only create problems in addiction but it also absorbs heavy bandwidth to the point of disturbing traffic of mobile phone operators.

The KCC has countered the immense consumption of porn on the Internet by requesting one carrier, SK Telecom, to shut its adult-only service, but has failed for the most part because most websites displaying adult-related content come from overseas, which the KCC has no control over.
