Justin Bieber Gives Jesus Christ Credit in VMA Win

It is surely a challenge for teen heartthrobs like Justin Bieber to maintain a spirit of humility. But when he could have taken all the glory for winning an award at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, Bieber instead thanked his Lord, Jesus Christ.

When Kim Kardashian announced Bieber's name as the winner of Best Male Video for “U Smile,” he rose and got a kiss from celebrity girlfriend Selena Gomez before making his way to the stage. After taking the iconic MTV Moonman Award from Kardashian, he approached the podium and made a pointed and humble speech.

"I just want to say thank you so much, not only to God but to Jesus," Bieber said. "Because I wouldn't be here without him. He's really blessed me. He's put me in this position. So I want to say thank you so much."

"Also, I want to say thank you to all the other nominees," he added. "They were amazing. I'm a true fan of all of them, so I want to share this award with all them. You guys are amazing."

On his Twitter account following his VMA win, he posted that he was “super #grateful and humbled. very cool night. kinda shocked.” He also posted that he “blanked out up there” and also wanted to thank his family, friends, team, and fans for supporting him.

Bieber has frequently used his celebrity status to make his faith known and to praise Jesus in front of the masses.

On Aug. 7, the 17-year-old earned the Teen Choice Award for Choice Music: Male Artist, at which time he again put Christ ahead of himself.

"You gotta keep God first, and always remember to keep family first," he said. "Jesus loves every one of you and I wanna say thank you so much you guys are amazing."

In February, Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette, told the Baptist Press that Justin became a Christian at the age of five or six years old, when he first put his faith in Jesus Christ. He was later baptized at the age of eight or nine.

Before hitting it big, Bieber sang Christian songs on YouTube, and even released a single called “Pray” last November, which talks about his prayer life and listening for God to speak.

Bieber's influence reaches far and wide. In 2010 he made Billboard's list of Top Artists of the Year, thanks, in part, to the success of the hit single, “Baby.” As of the writing of this article, he has over 12 million followers on Twitter. According to TwitterCounter.com, he is the second most followed person on the social networking site, one spot above President Barack Obama's 2012 campaign account and one below front-runner and fellow pop sensation Lady Gaga.
