Katy Perry Suicide: Singer Explains New Song 'By The Grace of God'

Katy Perry is promoting her upcoming fourth album "Prism" and explained the emotional new track "By The Grace of God" in a candid interview this week.

Named their Woman of the Year last year, the 27-year-old singer sat down with Billboard magazine this week when she recalled the devastating heartbreak of her divorce from Russell Brand.

In a shocking revelation, Perry said that the pain of the divorce was almost too much to bear, as depicted in the song "By the Grace of God."

"That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point," said the singer, according to Billboard. "I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?' All the songs are real-life moments."

Brand and Perry were married for 14 months before their split in December 2011.

"I can only write autobiographically," Perry added of the upcoming album's tracks. "I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs."

Raised in a Christian household and both parents being pastors, Perry's "By the Grace of God" includes the lyrics: "Lay on the bathroom floor / Couldn't take it anymore / By the Grace of God / I looked in the mirror and decided to stay."

Meanwhile, Perry previously revealed that, at the time of the split, Brand told her about the divorce through a text message.

"He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him," she explained to Vogue. "Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011."

Also at the time of their split, Brand released a statement noting his regard for Perry.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," said Brand in 2011. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Furthermore, Brand continued to reveal his thoughts about the divorce in countless interviews over the past two years.

While speaking to Ellen DeGeneres, Brand assured fans that he has "only love" for Perry.

Alternately, during a stand up comedy routine, Brand took a dig at his former wife when talking about monogamy in marriage.

"When you're a monk, you're not allowed to have sex with anyone," the 38-year-old actor said, according to the Daily Mail. "When you're married, it's one person. That's one more than a monk. It's different. I'd be having sex thinking, 'Think of anyone else, anyone else.'"

Despite the harrowing divorce from Brand, Perry seems to have found love in again with John Mayer, whom she called a "genius," according to Billboard.

"Prism" hits stores on Oct. 22.
