Kim Kardashian Divorce: Star Still Suffering From First Abusive Marriage, Says Counselor

Although many have labeled Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage a publicity stunt, others have ignored the fact that the reality star’s current love life may be a reflection of her rarely spoken about past as a battered wife.

Kardashian, 31, gave her first marriage three years before divorcing music-producer ex-husband Damon Thomas in 2003. Thomas, who has worked with Aretha Franklin, Chris Brown and Beyoncé, reportedly beat Kardashian on repeated occasions and forced her to get close to $5,000 in plastic surgery.

“He became enraged and punched me in the face. My face was bruised and swollen as a result,” Kardashian said in her official divorce papers. “I thought about calling the police but was afraid and decided not to do so.”

Although Daily Mail reports that Thomas was ordered to officially end their divorce in 2004 with a $56,000 payout, Marriage For Today Christian-based marriage coach Mike Fox said she might still be suffering.

“Past abuse will always affect the here and the now and the future. How you let it affect your present and your future is up to the individual,” Fox said. “Kim and the family are by no means a spiritual family. It has an impact on her current perspective.”

Although Kardashian has spoken about an upbringing based in the bible with her mother holding bible study sessions, Fox said her actions today reflect her spiritual standing.

“The Kardashians have built up a reputation for themselves,” Fox told The Christian Post. “It has not displayed that religion has had very much to do with a lifestyle. What you do and what you say shows what you believe.”

Fox believes Kardashian’s lack of spiritual foundation makes it hard for her to deal with problems from her abusive past. As a result, she is quick to run away from any uncomfortable situations.

“Her perspectives were most likely 99.9 percent shaped by a non-religious non-spiritual non-Christian influence which does not help you in healing and overcoming,” Fox told CP, describing the mentality Kardashian may have.

He said, “Instead it helps you to avoid, take revenge or have an avoidance mentality. If there is any inclination that reminds you of anything in the past you close it down and move on to the next.”

In her first interview since announcing the divorce, Kardashian admitted that although she flew to Australia to work immediately after announcing her divorce, she also felt the need to escape her issues.

“In the tough situation I think I'm trying to do the best that I can. It’s an escape to be able to come here,” a somber Kardashian said on the "Kyle and Jackie O Show" in Australia.

She stated, “I had this work commitment for our Kardashian collection handbags that we're doing out here. I really wanted to honor that commitment, stay here and come out here just to hope and get my mind off of everything."

The fact that Kardashian is living in the Hollywood environment makes matters worst, according to Fox.

“Unfortunately a lot of high profile entertainment folks that live the life in Hollywood don’t make a pure stand,” Fox told CP.

Although Kardashian spoke on the 'Kyle and Jackie O Show' about the amount of backlash she’s receiving being a result of displaying her marriage on reality television, Fox said celebrities do not realize how much of an impact that has on society.

“It’s always a facade to hear from public figures how their personal choices have nothing to do with anyone else which is simply not true, especially when it comes to the artistic side of entertainment and media,” Fox said. “Kim Kardashian is not just a political figure, so her spectrum of influence is much broader.”
