New Mexico Abortion Doctor to Retire for His Own 'Sanity'

A New Mexico abortion doctor has said he will retire at the end of the year for the sake of his own sanity.

Project Defending Life and Operation Rescue announced that Dr. Bruce Ferguson told a private investigator that he is retiring on Dec. 30 and closing his clinic for his own “sanity” and that "someone else needs to carry the burden now."

Project Defending Life and Operation Rescue aims to keep women informed of the dangers of abortion, close abortion clinics, and eventually work with the government to acknowledge rights of the unborn and end abortions entirely.

Project Defending Life, an anti-abortion advocacy group in Santa Fe, New Mexico, announced it was pleased to have achieved its goal of having no abortion clinics in the area.

"In 2011 our prayers and efforts to end abortion in New Mexico are becoming a reality. This is great news for the women and pre-born children of New Mexico. Abortion bears many consequences and one less 'doctor' to provide them is a benefit to all women," stated Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, Director of Project Defending Life.

"In fact, this is the second abortionist this month to retire and close down in the state of New Mexico," he added.

Project Defending Life announced that earlier this month, Santa Fe abortionist Lucia Cies also retired.

In an interview with The Christian Post, Cheryl Sullenger, the Senior Policy Advisor of Operation Rescue, said the private investigator Dr. Ferguson spoke to was associated with Project Defending Life. Project Defending Life and Operation Rescue work together to keep each other informed of their efforts.

When asked about the possibility of Ferguson just relocating his clinic, Sullenger told CP she doesn’t think Ferguson should reopen.

“He’s not doing too good and he’s concerned about his sanity,” she said. “And that’s not a safe thing,” she added.

She said if another clinic were to open in Sante Fe, Operation Rescue and Project Defending Life are prepared to take action. In Wichita, Kansas, where Operation Rescue has its headquarters in a former abortion clinic, women have been seeking other options such as adoption due to the lack of abortion clinics.

“I imagine the event will be opposed,” Sullenger surmised. “Many women got to abortion clinics for a panic fix and with abortion clinics taken out, women are encouraged to find other means than killing their babies. It’s only a good thing for a community not to have an abortion clinic.”
