Rock of Ages Flops at Box Office; Madagascar 3 Rules

Rock of Ages has flopped at the Box Office. The highly anticipated rock movie never got close to "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which maintained its number 1 spot with $35.5 million in its second weekend at domestic cinemas.

"Prometheus" despite some bad fan reviews has held number 2 with $20.2 million. However, "Rock of Ages" could only manage number 3 on the list, taking just $15.1 million. Not so bad you might think? But considering the movie cast includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin among others, and has been advertised on TV commercials throughout the U.S. over recent weeks, it's a poor taking.

Adam Sandler's new movie "That's My Boy" also dived and took just $13 million, which is the worst showing for one of his comedies for decades. The Sandler movie came in at number 5, behind "Snow White & the Huntsman," which took $13.8 million. That may be due to the movie being rated R, which prohibits under 17s from seeing the film. Most of Sandler's previous movies have been able to get a PG-13 rating thereby opening up its potential audience. Nevertheless the takings will be hugely disappointing to producers, as it's his worst debut since 1996's "Happy Gilmore," which was released when Sandler was a lot less well known, and opened in far fewer theaters than "That's My Boy."

Rock of Ages also disappointed at the box office, but Warner Bros. may be hoping the movie can hang around for some weeks near the top of the box office to earn a reasonable taking for its complete run. It has been reported that Rock of Ages managed to only draw older, female crowds.
