'Shameless' Season 7 News: Showtime Series Gets The Green Light For Season 7

"Shameless," the American dramedy TV series based on the British TV series of the same name, has been renewed for a seventh season. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour last Tuesday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime has ordered 12 episodes for Season 7, which is scheduled to air in 2017. Production for the seventh season is set to begin sometime this year.

The news that "Shameless" had been greenlit for another season followed Showtime President David Nevins' announcement that the show's sixth season premiere, "I Only Miss Her When I'm Breathing," which aired Jan. 10, was its most-watched series premiere to date. "Shameless" is produced by Showtime Networks and Warner Bros. Television.

A statement from Showtime's President of Programming Gary Levine said, "'Shameless' has clearly resonated with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights over the past six years."

"We are extremely pleased with the creative work being done by [executive producers] John Wells, Nancy Pimental and the entire cast, producers and writers — and we so appreciate 'Shameless'' clear and distinctive voice," Levine wrote.

"Shameless" follows the story of the dysfunctional Gallaghers. Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) is an alcoholic who leaves his children Fiona (Emmy Possum), Lip (Jeremy Allen White), Debbie (Emma Kenney), Carl (Ethan Cutkosky), Ian (Cameron Monaghan), and Liam to fend for themselves. The series also stars Justin Chatwin as Jimmy Lishman, Shanola Hampton as Veronica Fisher, Joan Cusack as Sheila Jackson, and Steve Howey as Kevin Ball. Brandon and Brenden Sims play the role of 4-year-old Liam.

The series has received mostly positive reviews from critics. William H. Macy won a Screen Actors Guild award for his role in "Shameless" in 2015, while Joan Cusack won a Primetime Emmy for hers in the same year.

"Shameless" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
