Tom Cruise Confirms 'Top Gun 2' Rumors

Tom Cruise has confirmed that the long-awaited sequel for the cult classic, “Top Gun”, is definitively in the works and that Cruise himself is cast in the film.

Cruise broke the news to viewers while promoting his latest blockbuster, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”

In the MTV News interview in Dubai, Cruise revealed that he wants to base the newest pilot flick largely on the same formula and strategy that was so successful in 1986.

“We all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way that we shot Top Gun,” Cruise said, referencing Tony Scott, the previous director of the hit movie.

This has not been the first whispers of a possible “Top Gun 2” - far from it in fact.

About a year ago, rumors surfaced that Cruise, Scott, and Chris McQuarrie, a writer, had been commissioned to start working on another “Top Gun.” Because of the vagueness of the claims, some thought the trio could be gearing up for a remake.

However, Scott came forward and dismissed the possibility of a remake.

“I don’t want to do a remake. I don’t want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie,” he told HitFix.com.

Now, Cruise confirms that the movie is in the works, and that he could once again don the ego of Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, everyone’s favorite risk-taking flyboy.

Cruise did offer some details on the sequel, albeit not many.

"I don't think Chris (McQuarrie) is going to write it," Cruise mentioned in the interview. "Chris is directing 'One Shot' right now, which I'm acting. We've got to go back in January and finish it."

Cruise also lets on that “Top Gun 2” is a long way off, most likely. A script has not been decided on, so development cannot proceed until it’s done.

"I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," Cruise said.
