Verizon Moves Away From Its Unlimited Data Plans

Verizon wireless carriers will from Thursday have to limit the times they check their Facebook updates or watch videos on Youtube.com each day.

Verizon's tiered, smart phone data plans will come into effect today, and will join AT&T and T-Mobile in dropping their unlimited data plans.

Verizon has replaced the unlimited data plans in favor of several tiered options including $30 for 2GB per month, $50 for 5GB, and $80 for 10GB. Customers with feature phones can also opt for 75MB for $10 per month.

The change will not affect existing customers however, who are able to keep their unlimited data plans whether or not they have a contract.

But new subscribers have now missed the opportunity to lock in the carrier’s $29.99 monthly unlimited data plan, and will now have to endure the new tiered model charging from $30 to $80 a month.

Although the price jump will not be welcomed by prospective customers Verizon Wireless spokesperson has promised that the price increase will only improve quality on the proclaimed nation’s best network.

"Our network right now is fine, but this is preparing us for a future that’s going to be filled with applications that take more and more data use. The plans need to evolve with the technology” says Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney.
Verizon Wireless predicts the pricing changes will not affect a bulk of the customer base.

“About 95 percent of the carrier’s smart phone subscribers use less than two gigabytes of data each month,” Raney said.

This entails that a majority of customers will continue paying $30 a month for their data plan. The carrier will charge $10 for every gigabyte exceeded but customers can sign up for alerts warning them of over-usage.

With all the major wireless networks moving away from unlimited plans, Sprint currently stands as the only major network that offers an unlimited data plan.
