Voting, Politics and Evangelism

Politics can turn normally calm people into ranting, raving lunatics. This divisive subject can transform a friendly chat over coffee at a Starbucks into a venomous, verbal brawl. But it can also be a great segue into an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus.

Questions like "What do you think about Mitt Romney being a Mormon?" or "Have you ever wondered what President Obama believes about God?" can be surprising and effective conversation starters.

However you choose to transition the subject from politics to the gospel, ask God to give you the right mixture of wisdom, tact and boldness. Then make the transition and start talking about Jesus. After all, He is the only one who can truly transform this nation from the inside out.

As we lean closer and closer to the election, the conversations at your job, school and Facebook page will gain in frequency and intensity. As they do I challenge to refuse to make it your number one priority to convert your friends, classmates and co-workers to your political point of view. Instead, make it your highest goal to gently persuade them to put their faith in Jesus Christ.

Their newfound faith in Jesus will impact their politics more than any political argument you could ever present. At the moment of their salvation they will be indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 1:13,14) and He will begin to renew their thinking on every subject (Romans 12:2)…including politics.

As we get closer to election day make it your mission to get people to "vote" for Jesus in their hearts through faith. That vote may make the biggest difference in the decisions they make in the voting booth.
